President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to amend the Drugs Act and introduce a new anti-gang crime law, aiming to tackle the nation’s pressing issues of drug addiction and gang violence.

In a post on his official X account, President Muizzu highlighted that deficiencies in the current Drugs Act have posed significant challenges for state agencies in their efforts to combat illegal narcotics addiction. He stated that the government has reviewed the law in consultation with relevant agencies and will submit the proposed amendments to Parliament within the coming week.

The amendments are designed to remove barriers that hinder investigations and prosecutions of drug-related cases, thereby strengthening the legal framework to address the narcotics epidemic effectively.

President Muizzu also announced plans to introduce a new gang-related crime prevention bill to replace the existing Prohibition on Gang Violence Act. The proposed legislation, which will be submitted to Parliament within the next two weeks, seeks to address gang crimes that are often closely linked to drug abuse.

The President praised the public for their support in addressing these critical issues and reiterated the government’s commitment to finding permanent solutions to the challenges posed by drugs and gang-related violence.
