Parliament has passed the government’s Urban Development Bill today, marking a significant step toward the planned development of urban centers across the country.

The bill was approved with 70 votes, while 11 members voted against it. Its passing signals the government’s commitment to urbanization and infrastructure development in key regions.

As part of the initiative, the government has already identified seven islands where urban centers will be developed. These include R. Ungoofaaru, B. Eydhafushi, Lh. Naifaru, Adh. Mahibadhoo, F. Nilandhoo, Dh. Kudahuvadhoo, and L. Fonadhoo. The urbanization plan aims to transform these areas into thriving urban hubs.

The bill outlines that the president, based on advice from the cabinet, will determine the national policy regarding the designation, development, and management of urban areas.

Additionally, the bill provides for the creation of Area Development Master Plans for each urban center and introduces the establishment of an urban development authority, tasked with overseeing development activities and issuing development permits to approved developers in these areas.
