President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has approved a comprehensive plan to broaden employment opportunities for inmates both within and outside prison facilities, marking a significant step in reforming the correctional system.

The decision, made during a Cabinet meeting on December 1, 2024, followed deliberations on a proposal from the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology. The approved plan outlines several key reforms designed to integrate rehabilitation efforts with employment and sentencing systems.

Under the new framework, inmates who complete rehabilitation programs under guidelines established by the Ministry and the Maldives Correctional Service will qualify for structured sentence reductions and pardons.

The reforms include the introduction of a new rehabilitation framework, enhancing job opportunities for inmates inside and outside prison facilities, and linking rehabilitation achievements to mechanisms for pardons, parole, and sentence reductions.

The plan also emphasizes expanding community service initiatives, offering inmates opportunities to contribute meaningfully to society while serving their sentences.

To ensure effective implementation, the government has assigned specific responsibilities to relevant agencies, with clearly defined timelines for achieving and monitoring objectives.

This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to fostering inmate reintegration into society through meaningful rehabilitation and work opportunities, furthering its broader vision of holistic correctional reform.
