President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, following the advice of the Cabinet, has approved the establishment of Tobacco Cessation Clinics across all islands and cities in the Maldives.

The decision was made during the Cabinet meeting held on Sunday after deliberations on a proposal presented by the Ministry of Health.

Under this initiative, the government will provide essential medications for individuals seeking to quit tobacco use, made available through the State Trading Organization (STO) at all city and atoll hospitals. Additionally, tobacco cessation services will now be categorized as preventative healthcare services, ensuring better accessibility and integration into the healthcare system.

The Administration has already implemented significant reforms as part of its master plan on tobacco cessation. These include amendments to the Tobacco Control Act and the Export-Import Act, which have led to increased levies on cigarettes and electronic smoking devices. The measures aim to reduce tobacco consumption across the nation within four years.

This comprehensive approach reflects the Administration's commitment to addressing the long-term health impacts of tobacco use and supporting citizens in leading healthier lifestyles.
