The Maldives and Japan signed an Exchange of Notes today for a project to boost the operational capacity of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), marking a significant step in combating corruption. The ceremony was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The agreement, signed by Foreign Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel and Japanese Ambassador Takeuchi Midori, will assist Japan’s Economic and Social Development Programme. Valued at 300 million Japanese Yen (USD 2.158 million), the project aims to enhance the ACC’s mobility infrastructure, enabling effective investigations across the Maldives' dispersed islands.

During the signing ceremony, Minister Dr. Khaleel highlighted the project’s role in strengthening governance and ensuring swift action on corruption. He expressed gratitude to Japan for its continued support in building a transparent and accountable administration in the Maldives.

The Minister also reflected on the 57 years of Maldives-Japan diplomatic relations, underscoring Japan’s role as a vital partner in the country’s socio-economic and governance initiatives.

Senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Finance, ACC, and the Embassy of Japan attended the ceremony.
