President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that development projects planned for Gaafaru will commence next year under the 2025 budget. The President announced during a meeting with Gaafaru residents as part of his tour of Malé Atoll islands.

Acknowledging delays in the island’s development, President Muizzu assured residents that his administration is committed to delivering on its promises.

Highlighting the need for an expanded and upgraded harbor, the President said the Council and relevant Ministry had been tasked with designing a plan that addresses immediate and long-term needs. Once finalized, the project will be included in the Public Sector Investment Programme (PSIP) and implemented promptly.

He also announced that improvements to Gaafaru Health Centre and expansions to the local school will be prioritized under the PSIP’s new policy initiatives next year.

Addressing concerns about the ice plant, President Muizzu explained that while plans to double its capacity remain unchanged, immediate attention will be given to establishing similar facilities in communities currently lacking such infrastructure. He reassured residents that Gaafaru’s ice plant upgrades remain a key commitment.

The President also emphasized his administration’s focus on other development areas, including sports and waste management, ensuring that no sector is neglected in the pursuit of progress for Gaafaru.

Residents expressed optimism about the announcements, anticipating the tangible benefits these projects will bring to their community.
