On the occasion of National Fishermen's Day, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu reaffirmed the nation's commitment to honoring the hard work and contributions of fishermen. In a post on his official X account, the President emphasized that recognizing their tireless efforts, often carried out in challenging weather conditions, is a national duty.

The President announced several initiatives to support the fisheries sector, including a pledge to expedite payments for weighed fish. Starting today, payments will be deposited within 48 hours for fishing boats with accounts at the Bank of Maldives (BML).

To address fuel-related concerns, fishermen can now purchase fuel at State Trading Organization (STO) rates from facilities operated by STO and Fuel Supplies Maldives (FSM) in K. Himmafushi, GA. Kooddoo, Lh. Felivaru, and S. Hulhumeedhoo. Additionally, fuel at the same rates will be available for vessels linked to Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) at GA. Kooddoo and Lh. Felivaru.

In a key announcement, President Muizzu revealed the Government’s decision to grant legal status to fishermen, enabling them to access employee benefits similar to those in other sectors. This move reflects the administration’s dedication to improving the livelihoods of those in the fisheries industry.

The President also highlighted the Government’s efforts to enhance income from fishing by expanding access to foreign markets, increasing fish processing facilities, and improving fish storage capacities. These measures, initiated during the administration's first year, aim to strengthen the fisheries sector, a vital component of the Maldivian economy.

Engaging directly with fishermen, the President has held consultations to address their concerns and explore solutions, reaffirming the Government’s commitment to understanding and supporting their needs.
