Members of the Progressive National Congress (PNC) have called for the arrest of MDP Chairman Fayyaz Ismail following his controversial remarks against President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, likening the situation to the fate of former President Mohamed Amin, who was overthrown and died in exile.

The matter was raised as an emergency issue in the Parliament today and sparked heated debate among lawmakers. PNC MP Ibrahim Didi from Addu South Constituency criticized the MDP, claiming that such actions are a recurring pattern whenever the party is in opposition. He drew parallels to past incidents, such as the unrest following former President Mohamed Nasheed’s resignation, when the country’s judicial system came under attack.

Abdullah Rifau, PNC MP for South Maafannu, warned that allowing such rhetoric could lead to severe consequences, urging the immediate arrest of individuals making such provocative statements. He emphasized the importance of taking swift action to prevent further incitement.

Hithadhoo Central MP Ahmed Azaan described the MDP as an extremist party with a history of violence. He called for its leaders to be summoned before parliamentary committees to address their actions and ensure accountability.

The PNC has strongly condemned Fayyaz’s remarks, viewing them as a direct threat to national stability and urging authorities to take decisive action against those promoting inflammatory rhetoric. The debate has highlighted ongoing tensions between the ruling coalition and the opposition.
