The Finance Committee of the Parliament has recommended a criminal investigation into former Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail, former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, and former President’s Office Minister Ali Shiyam over compensation payments made during the previous administration.

The recommendation follows concerns over significant amounts of compensation paid to various companies during the last government. The total sum involved has yet to be disclosed but is believed to be substantial. The resolution for the investigation was tabled and passed by the Finance Committee with support from People’s National Congress (PNC) member Abdulla Shareef.

Hithadhoo Central MP Ahmed Azaan of the PNC claimed that during Fayyaz Ismail’s tenure on the settlement committee, a member of his family was allegedly allocated land to develop a resort, raising concerns over potential conflicts of interest. Azan emphasized that such actions warrant a thorough investigation to ensure accountability and transparency in government decisions involving public funds.

The decision to recommend the investigation was met with opposition from Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) member Abdul Ghafoor Moosa. He criticized the move as unprecedented, stating that the Finance Committee had never before singled out specific individuals for scrutiny. Gapo described the recommendation as a politically motivated attempt to intimidate opposition figures, arguing that the committee's focus should remain on institutional processes rather than targeting individuals.

The Finance Committee’s recommendation will now be forwarded to the relevant authorities for further action. Whether a formal investigation will be initiated depends on decisions by law enforcement and judicial bodies. This development underscores ongoing tensions between political parties in the Maldives and raises questions about transparency in past government dealings.
