The number of reported cyber crimes in the Maldives has doubled this year compared to 2023, Police Commissioner Ali Shujau revealed during the launch of Cyber Expo 2024 yesterday.
Addressing the growing threat, the Commissioner emphasized the urgent need to curb the spread of cybercrime and expand cyber security measures across the nation.
“In 2023, the Maldives Police Service recorded 99 cybercrime cases. This year, the figure has risen sharply to 173,” Commissioner Shujau said.
The most frequently reported crimes include hacking incidents targeting bank accounts, social media platforms, and both government and private office systems. Other cases involve forging illegal documents, creating fraudulent online business pages, and executing scams under false pretenses.
Commissioner Shujau underscored that increased awareness and vigilance among individuals could significantly reduce the prevalence of such crimes.
The Cyber Expo 2024 serves as a platform to educate the public on emerging threats and foster collaboration among stakeholders to strengthen the nation’s defenses against cybercrime.
