Authorities have issued fines to four individuals for vaping, marking the first enforcement actions since the implementation of stricter regulations under the Tobacco Control Act.
The amendments, which took effect on December 17, ban the importation, distribution, and use of vape-related products. The police confirmed that the fines so far amounted to MVR 20,000.
According to the Tobacco Control Act, individuals caught using electronic cigarettes, vaping devices, or related products face fines of up to MVR 5,000 for first-time violations. Repeat offenders or those found in breach of other provisions of the Act could face penalties as high as MVR 50,000.
Those fined for vaping violations are notified via SMS, which includes a payment link to War Pay for settling the penalty.
Authorities have emphasized that the crackdown aims to curb the use of vaping products and promote public health, urging citizens to comply with the regulations.
