The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has denied any involvement in the allocation of land to beneficiaries under the government’s land ownership scheme.
Managing Director Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed made this statement amidst ongoing investigations into allegations of irregularities involving land allocation.
Meanwhile, Police and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) are probing claims that Mohamed Fazeel Rasheed, Deputy Managing Director of Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) and brother of Fazul, facilitated the allocation of land to individuals not listed as eligible beneficiaries under the scheme.
In a press conference, Fazul clarified that HDC’s role does not include issuing registrations, preparing agreements, or distributing land under the landlord scheme. He emphasized that the corporation lacks the authority to allocate land to those not listed as beneficiaries.
Addressing circulating documents linked to the case, Fazul stated they are records of correspondence between HDC and the Housing Ministry, used to verify requests submitted through the HDC portal. He stressed that these documents do not signify any improper action by HDC or its officials.
Fazul added that the requests reviewed by HDC pertained to boundary wall permits. The Housing Ministry was consulted after discrepancies arose involving two parties claiming the same plot. He assured the public that he would fully cooperate with the police investigation and denied any personal involvement or wrongdoing in the matter.
Fazul also dismissed the allegations against him as baseless rumors propagated for political gain.
The police have initiated a criminal investigation into the alleged misallocation of land, with officers visiting the HDC premises as part of their inquiry. The ACC has confirmed its parallel investigation into the claims.
HDC has pledged transparency and cooperation in resolving the matter while maintaining its stance on the allegations.
