Former President Mohamed Nasheed has criticized the previous administration for its handling of land allocation, stating that the process under the landlord scheme was conducted unfairly. He expressed hope that the current government would address and rectify these issues.
The controversy over land being granted to individuals who were not eligible under the housing land ownership scheme has sparked significant public debate.
In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Nasheed said that the previous land allocation lists were created unjustly, leaving many people deprived of their rights. He added that similar injustices have been repeated in the current allocations, further exacerbating the issue.
However, Nasheed noted that efforts are being made to correct these wrongs. He highlighted the replacement of key officials at the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) as a positive step toward reform. He also expressed confidence in Mauroof Jameel, the newly appointed Managing Director of HDC, to resolve these issues effectively.
In recent developments, all but one of the HDC board members, including former Managing Director Fazul Rasheed, were suspended. Following this, Fazul resigned from his position.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and the police are currently investigating the case. Nasheed voiced his hope for a thorough investigation to ensure accountability and prevent future injustices in land allocation.
The government has reiterated its commitment to transparency and fairness in addressing the ongoing concerns surrounding land distribution.
