Authorities in the Maldives have launched an investigation into the plight of 40 Indian laborers brought to the country under troubling circumstances.
The laborers, employed by a company called Renaatus, shared their ordeal through a video message appealing to the Indian government for help. According to the workers, they arrived in the Maldives five months ago with the promise of earning between MVR 25,000 and MVR 30,000 per month.
While they were paid in full for the first month, they received only half their salaries for the subsequent two months, and no payments have been made since then.
The Protector of Emigrants Office in India has confirmed that the issue has been brought to the attention of the Indian government as well, which is now collaborating with Maldivian authorities to resolve the matter.
The Maldives Police Service has also officially taken up the case and is investigating to ensure justice for the workers and accountability for those responsible.
