Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has expressed his heartfelt wish for the unity of the people to last forever.

His message came on the occasion of National Unity Day, commemorated in connection with the tsunami that struck the Maldives and neighboring countries on December 26, 2004.

Extending his felicitation to all Maldivians on National Unity Day, President Solih reflected on the spirit of solidarity demonstrated during the tragic event. He highlighted the unparalleled unity, care, and assistance displayed by communities in the aftermath of the tsunami.

In his message, Solih prayed for the preservation of the strong bonds between people and for blessings upon those who lost their lives in the disaster.

The tsunami caused significant destruction across the Maldives, affecting many islands and displacing families. The tragedy claimed at least 82 lives, with 26 people still listed as missing.

National Unity Day is observed in remembrance of the resilience and solidarity shown by Maldivians during the catastrophe, as communities came together to rebuild lives and provide support. The day serves as a reminder of the strength found in unity and the importance of collective effort in overcoming challenges.
