Speaker of the Parliament, Mohamed Nasheed, urged to inoculate himself with the Covid-19 vaccines the Maldives has received.
Speaking about the urgency in a tweet today, Nasheed said that he wants to get vaccinated with the Covid-19 vaccines the Maldives has received from India.
“I want to get vaccinated and become immune to the disease, to minimize spreading of the virus from myself to others, and become protected from Covid-19, hoping everyone will survive from the pandemic.” Nasheed’s tweet reads as loosely translated.
Nasheed’s tweet comes at a time where the opposition political party members continuously have spoken against the Covishield vaccine received by India. Meanwhile, the Health Protection Agency awaits the approval of the Covid-19 vaccine from the Maldives Food and Drug Authority and WHO.
The 100,000 doses of the Covishield vaccine arrived in the Maldives on January 20. Covishield is based on the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine, co-developed by the Oxford University and AstraZeneca to combat Covid-19.
In addition, the Maldives confirmed vaccines for 20 percent of the population through the COVAX facility of the WHO.
As per the Health Protection Agency (HPA), three percent of the vaccines received will be allocated to frontline health and social care workers, and 17 percent of the vaccine to be prioritized for people of age 50 years and above and those at high risk of developing complications.
