The government has proposed an amendment to the Decentralization of Administrative Areas Act to introduce Ramadan allowances for Women's Development Committees (WDCs).

Machchangoalhi Central MP Ahmed Zameer moved the amendment on behalf of the government. The amendment, presented today, aims to financially empower WDCs by mandating that members be paid a salary in line with the National Pay Commission and receive Ramadan allowances similar to government employees.

The proposed law also requires councils to allocate 5% of the government's grants to support WDC responsibilities. Additionally, councils will be obligated to transfer the funds for the first two quarters to the committees within 30 days of receiving the funds, with further disbursements regulated by the Local Government Authority (LGA).

Currently, city council WDC presidents receive MVR 7,000 as salary and allowances, while vice presidents and members receive MVR 6,500 and MVR 6,000, respectively. In village councils, WDC presidents earn MVR 6,000, vice presidents MVR 5,500, and members MVR 5,000.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu recently announced that WDC members will be entitled to the Ramadan allowance starting from the next Ramadan, in line with the existing provision of MVR 3,000 for Muslim government employees.
