The newly launched electric vehicle (EV) taxi fleet, operated by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), has gained strong public support despite opposition from some taxi drivers.

The fleet service was officially launched on Wednesday. Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen clarified that the initiative was not an attempt by the government to interfere in private taxi services but rather an effort to ensure an essential public service.

Public reactions to the government’s initiative have been largely positive, with many people welcoming the new taxi service as a solution to long-standing transportation issues. Complaints about difficulties in finding taxis, particularly for short-distance trips within Malé, have been common. Many residents also pointed out that taxis have been more readily available for trips to Hulhumalé or Velana International Airport rather than for city rides.

Several social media users expressed their frustration with the existing taxi system, stating that drivers often dictate prices and destinations at their discretion. Some hailed the government’s move as a necessary intervention to regulate fares and improve accessibility.

The MTCC’s EV taxi service operates through a dedicated software system, ensuring that taxis are dispatched quickly and efficiently. The government has stated that passengers will be able to book a ride within a minute of requesting one.
