The Parliament has approved a Ramadan allowance for members of women’s development committees (WDCs).
The amendment to the Decentralization Act, proposed by Machhangolhi Central MP Ahmed Zameer, was passed with 72 votes in favor and no votes against. The amendment ensures that WDC members who do not receive a Ramadan allowance from other employment will be paid MVR 3,000 before the start of Ramadan.
The bill also introduces measures to financially empower WDCs, allocating 5% of the government’s free assistance to councils for their responsibilities. Funds for the first two quarters must be disbursed within 30 days of receipt.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has previously assured that WDC members will receive the allowance starting this Ramadan.
