The Dhivehi Language Academy has introduced 160 new words over the past two years, with 88 words created in 2023 and 72 words added last year.

A list of these new words was officially published in the Government Gazette today. Among them are Dhivehi equivalents for commonly used English terms, such as "Maares" for "vision." Some English words, like "vape," have been adapted with minimal changes, often modifying a syllable to fit Dhivehi phonetics.

The introduction of new words has sparked mixed reactions. While some have criticized certain additions, arguing they do not resonate well with the public, others have welcomed the initiative, seeing it as an important step in preserving and modernizing the Dhivehi language.

The Dhivehi Language Academy continues to develop new terms, aiming to enrich the language while keeping up with evolving linguistic trends.
