President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has ratified an amendment granting a Ramadan allowance to members of Women’s Development Committees (WDCs).

The new provision, which was passed by Parliament during the 6th sitting of the 2025 Parliamentary session on February 18, 2025, ensures that WDC members who are not already receiving Ramadan allowances under other laws will receive MVR 3,000 before the start of each Ramadan.

The amendment is part of broader changes to the Decentralization Act (Act No. 7/2010), aiming to strengthen the role of WDCs in islands and cities. The bill also clarifies the responsibilities of WDCs and provides structured mechanisms for administrative support, training, and facilities to help them effectively fulfill their duties.

In addition to the allowance, the amendment addresses funding challenges by introducing clear guidelines for allocating and managing government grants, ensuring that local councils and the Local Government Authority (LGA) support WDCs in accessing resources for their activities.

Following the President's approval, the amendment has been published on gazette and is now in effect.
