Former Kendhoo Constituency MP and lawyer Ali Hussain has raised concerns over government interference in the judiciary, following the suspension of three Supreme Court judges by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).
The Supreme Court had scheduled a hearing today on the disqualification of MPs, but it was abruptly canceled after the JSC suspended Justices Husnu Al-Suud, Dr. Azmiralda Zahir, and Mahaz Ali Zahir.
Speaking at a press conference, Ali Hussain questioned the sudden involvement of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in investigating Supreme Court judges. He described the events of the day as clear evidence of government influence over the judiciary.
He criticized the JSC for suspending three judges while a case was set for hearing, stating that such actions were unacceptable. He further alleged that the government was attempting to intimidate judges by creating cases against them without basis.
Ali Hussain argued that the government was leveraging its parliamentary majority to pass unlawful amendments, including the Courts Act amendment approved today. He claimed this was another step towards weakening judicial independence.
The JSC confirmed that the three Supreme Court judges were suspended due to an ongoing criminal investigation. The commission’s decision led to the cancellation of the scheduled Supreme Court hearing on the interim order regarding MP disqualifications.
