President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has appointed Uz Abdul Ghanee Mohamed of H. Host Side as the new Chief Justice of the Maldives. The appointment ceremony was held this morning at the President’s Office, where the President presented the official letter of appointment.
The appointment was made in accordance with Article 147 of the Constitution. The oath of office was administered by Supreme Court Justice Uz Abdulla Hameed, after which Chief Justice Uz Abdul Ghanee signed the official declaration.
Uz Abdul Ghanee holds an LLB (Hons.) in Law and Islamic Jurisprudence from Al-Azhar University (2000), a Master’s degree in Islamic Judicial Sciences and Shariah Policy (2022), and a Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching (2024) from the Islamic University of Maldives. He is currently pursuing a doctorate in Islamic Judicial Sciences and Legislative Policy.
Before his appointment as Chief Justice, he served as President of the Tax Appeal Tribunal. He has also been a lecturer at the Islamic University of Maldives, Villa College, and Zikura College. His judicial career includes positions on the benches of the Supreme Court and Civil Court, as well as serving as Chief Judge of the High Court. Uz Abdul Ghanee has also been a member of the Judicial Service Commission.
