Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has called on state leaders to uphold the rule of law, condemning what he described as direct political interference in an ongoing constitutional case at the Supreme Court.

In a social media post, Solih criticized the government’s actions, stating that they undermine judicial independence and intimidate judges. He warned that the erosion of democratic institutions is consolidating power in the hands of the President, with ordinary citizens bearing the consequences.

Solih reiterated concerns that the country is shifting towards authoritarian rule. His remarks follow recent legislative changes, including Parliament’s decision to amend the Courts Act and reduce the number of Supreme Court justices from seven to five.

Additionally, the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has suspended three Supreme Court justices—Husnu Suood, Dr. Azmiralda Zahir, and Mahaz Ali Zahir—a move that has sparked further controversy over judicial independence.
