The steering committee of the Hithadhoo Central constituency has issued a statement against MP Ahmed Azaan for violating the People's National Congress (PNC) whip line.
Azaan did not participate in the vote when the PNC's parliamentary group enforced a three-line whip to pass an amendment to the Courts Act, reducing the number of Supreme Court judges from seven to five.
In a statement released today, the Hithadhoo Central Constituency Steering Committee emphasized that Azaan was elected to parliament on behalf of the PNC. The statement also noted that Azaan claimed his decision to abstain was made after consulting with his constituents.
The committee urged Azaan not to repeat such actions that go against the party's whip line. The statement was signed by eight members of the constituency’s steering committee.
Meanwhile, Azaan stated yesterday that he remains aligned with the government but chose not to vote for the bill because he believes the amendment is unconstitutional. He argued that supporting such legislation would contradict Article 75 of the Constitution.
