PNC MP Ahmed Azaan Marzooq, representing the Hithadhoo Central constituency in Parliament, has alleged that his removal from key parliamentary committees was due to pressure from individuals benefiting from corruption within state-owned enterprises (SOEs).
Speaking to an online media outlet, Azaan claimed that his removal was linked to parliamentary investigations into fraudulent activities in government-owned companies. He suggested that influential figures with vested interests were behind his exclusion.
Azaan stated that the Public Accounts Committee had begun scrutinizing the procurement practices of SOEs and had requested procurement data from the past year. According to procurement data from VEMCO, the company reportedly spent MVR 65 million on rent last year.
Despite his removal, Azaan asserted that accountability efforts would continue and that those responsible for misconduct would be held accountable. He stated that pressure to obstruct investigations came from multiple directions, particularly from individuals who benefited from fraudulent activities within SOEs.
Azaan has been removed from the Public Accounts Committee and the Committee on National Security Services (241) and reassigned to the Petitions Committee and the Privileges and Ethics Committee.
His removal from powerful parliamentary committees and his strained relationship with the government follow his refusal to vote on the bill to reduce the number of Supreme Court judges. He was also reportedly expelled from the PNC’s internal WhatsApp group.
