The total fines collected for using and possessing vapes in violation of the Tobacco Control Act have reached MVR 195,500, the Maldives Police Service has reported.

According to police statistics released, 35 people were fined in 41 cases related to vape use over the last three months. In February, 12 individuals were fined in 13 cases, resulting in the recovery of MVR 65,000.

Police data also shows that in January, 12 people were fined MVR 70,000 in 14 cases, while in December, 11 individuals faced penalties amounting to MVR 60,500 in 14 cases. However, police did not confiscate the vaping devices despite imposing fines.

Earlier, authorities stated that those fined would receive a text message on their mobile phones with details of the penalty and a payment link via the Vaaru Pay portal to settle the amount.

The Maldives Police Service is actively enforcing the amended Tobacco Control Act, taking legal action against those who sell, distribute, or exchange electronic cigarettes and vaping devices. Individuals found using such devices will also face penalties in accordance with the law.
