Abdul Raheem, Speaker of the Parliament and member of the ruling PNC has clarified that while the party holds a supermajority in Parliament, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu does not control the institution.
Speaker Abdul Raheem made these remarks during a parliamentary session today, during which discussions centered around proposed amendments to the Rules of Procedure of the Parliament.
In response to comments made by Kendhoo MP Mauroof Zakir, who accused the parliament of being under the President’s control and operating like a “bot,” Abdul Raheem emphasized that the parliament is functioning according to the rules and regulations established to guide its operations.
Abdul Raheem added that despite the President’s party holding a supermajority, he does not believe that the President directly controls the workings of the Parliament.
Further addressing the debate, Abdul Raheem pointed out that the Maldives follows a separation of powers system, where each branch operates independently under oversight, preventing any single entity from dominating the others. He stressed that this system ensures the proper functioning of the democratic process in the country.
