A constitutional amendment proposing to hold presidential and parliamentary elections simultaneously has been submitted to Parliament.

According to the agenda for Monday’s extraordinary sitting, a preliminary debate will be held on the Constitution Amendment Bill moved by Inguraidhoo Constituency MP Ibrahim Falah. The amendment seeks to require presidential and parliamentary elections to be held at the same time, set the parliamentary term at five years from December 1, and provide for the dissolution of Parliament at the end of this period. It also states that the first sitting of a newly elected parliament will be held in December.

Monday’s agenda also includes the first reading and preliminary debate of the Penal Code Amendment Bill moved by Hithadhoo Central Constituency MP Ahmed Azaan Marzooq, and the Pensions Act Amendment Bill moved by Milandhoo Constituency MP Hassan Mufeed Abdul Qadir on behalf of the government.

Lawmakers are also scheduled to decide on a committee report on the Re-Employment Bill and the appointment of a chairperson to the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives.
