President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the Administration is assessing the feasibility of closing schools annually during Ramadan without reducing total teaching hours.
Speaking on the ‘Rayyithunnaa Eku’ podcast hosted by the President’s Office, he noted that while this year’s academic calendar initially scheduled a one-week school break for Ramadan, it was later extended for the full month based on positive feedback from parents. The Administration now aims to formalize this practice in future academic calendars.
The President highlighted the benefits of this initiative, stating that it would give students and parents more time for religious observances. He also reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to facilitating Eid celebrations and supporting spiritual activities.
Additionally, President Muizzu announced plans to introduce a Generation Ban to curb tobacco use among young people in the Maldives. He explained that the ban aims to prevent future generations from taking up smoking, with further details to be disclosed in the coming months.
The Generation Ban, a policy already implemented in some countries, seeks to progressively phase out tobacco use by restricting sales to individuals born after a certain year. The President also outlined broader health initiatives, including measures to make fruits and vegetables more affordable, reinforcing the Government’s commitment to promoting a healthier lifestyle.
