President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has unveiled his vision and detailed plans to transform the healthcare sector in the Maldives, with an emphasis on providing high-quality, affordable healthcare domestically, ensuring that Maldivians no longer need to seek medical treatment abroad.

Speaking during the second edition of the Rayyithunnaa Eku podcast—an initiative designed to engage with the public and foster governance through active consultation—President Muizzu reaffirmed his commitment to improving healthcare access across the nation.

The President highlighted that the Greater Malé region, home to over half of the country’s population, would be a primary focus in the development of healthcare services. However, he assured that this focus would not come at the expense of other regions, emphasizing the government's ongoing efforts to expand health facilities on all inhabited islands.

Addressing key projects currently underway, President Muizzu provided updates on the expansion of Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), the Maldives' largest government-run hospital. A 75-bed expansion is in progress, which will add 44 general ward beds, 15 High Dependency Unit (HDU) beds, and 14 private rooms. The new facilities are expected to be operational by May 2025.

Furthermore, the President highlighted improvements at Hulhumalé Hospital, which has recently been upgraded to a tertiary facility. Plans for a new 100-bed tertiary hospital in Vilimalé, funded by the Chinese government, are also in motion.

The President’s vision also includes establishing specialized hospitals focused on women’s and children’s healthcare, cancer treatment, and thalassemia care. These initiatives are aimed at addressing the specific healthcare needs of vulnerable populations.

In addition to expanding infrastructure, President Muizzu stressed the importance of strengthening public health initiatives and implementing environmental healthcare policies to improve overall health and reduce the need for medical travel abroad.

Reaffirming his dedication to active public consultation, the President acknowledged the challenges many Maldivians face in accessing treatment outside the country and reiterated his commitment to improving healthcare services within the Maldives.

The Rayyithunnaa Eku podcast, available on the President’s Office website and social media platforms, serves as an ongoing avenue for the public to engage with the government and voice their concerns.
