The Democrats President Imthiyaz Fahmy (Inthi) has signalled openness to a potential merger between the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and the Democrats, following recent calls for unity by former President Mohamed Nasheed.
Imthiyaz, who served as a member of parliament for 15 years, shared a post on social media expressing support for Nasheed’s view that collaboration between the MDP and Democrats would be the best path forward for the country at this time.
Nasheed’s remarks have reignited conversations on the possibility of reunifying the two parties, which split following internal rifts in the MDP ahead of the 2023 presidential election.
MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail also welcomed Nasheed’s comments, stating that while many in the MDP remain dissatisfied with how Nasheed and the Democrats acted during the last election, the party's doors remain open.
The prospect of a merger has sparked lively debate on social media, with members of both parties and the public weighing in on the idea of opposition unity.
The Democrats were formed in 2023 by Nasheed and his allies after a major fallout with the MDP leadership. Since then, calls for unity have surfaced occasionally, but this marks the most significant sign yet of a possible reconciliation.
