The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has announced plans to restrict the import of vehicles without a special permit, in a bid to address growing parking and congestion issues in urban areas.

Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen revealed on PSM that the new regulation will be published in the government gazette in the coming days. Once implemented, a 90-day transitional period will be provided before the rule is fully enforced.

Under the new policy, individuals or businesses intending to import vehicles must first obtain a special permit. The ministry will require proof of adequate space for vehicle registration and storage before granting permission.

“If you are bringing a vehicle for personal or other use, you must have a designated place to register it. For commercial purposes, there must be a proper storage location for the vehicle,” Minister Ameen said.

Currently, Malé is facing serious congestion, with a large number of four-wheeled vehicles lacking appropriate parking spaces. Although the current system mandates proof of garage space for registration, multiple vehicles are often registered under the same garage, undermining the regulation.

The upcoming rule is part of the government’s broader effort to improve traffic management and reduce overcrowding on the roads, particularly in the capital region.
