A delegation from TikTok met with Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau and State Minister for Homeland Security and Technology Dr. Mohamed Kinaan on Tuesday to discuss platform-related issues, including security concerns and income opportunities for Maldivians.
The meeting, held at the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology, focused on addressing key concerns surrounding user privacy and safety on the platform. Discussions also explored how TikTok could support Maldivians in monetizing content and boosting digital livelihoods.
According to the Ministry, the engagement reflects growing collaboration between the government and global tech platforms to ensure responsible usage while enabling economic opportunities through digital platforms.
The TikTok team also met senior officials from the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade during their visit. They discussed the role of TikTok in income generation, particularly through features like TikTok Live, which has become a popular revenue stream among Maldivians—though earnings are currently channelled via agents in nearby countries.
The visit comes amid global conversations on regulating social media platforms and ensuring user data protection.
