Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has affirmed that the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) remains united and resilient, dismissing allegations of internal divisions and criticizing recent legal actions taken against key party leaders.
In a statement on X, Solih condemned the defamation case filed by First Lady Sajidha Mohamed against MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail, party member Maryam Zubair (Mandhi), and the party itself. The lawsuit, filed in the Family Court, accuses the MDP leaders of making defamatory remarks about President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s son during party rallies.
Solih described the case as a politically motivated attempt to silence the opposition.
“Charging MDP leaders under various pretexts to intimidate them is a foolish act,” he said. “These kinds of tactics are not new to us. The MDP has faced worse and never backed down, and we won’t back down now.”
He emphasized that the party remains firmly united despite growing pressure from the government. “The MDP is strong, its members are united, and we are committed to continue working in the best interest of the people,” he said.
Solih’s remarks come as MDP President Abdulla Shahid also spoke out in defense of Fayyaz Ismail in a statement on X, denouncing the lawsuit as an effort to stifle freedom of expression.
