President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that 150,000 expatriates in the Maldives have completed biometric registration, a key step in addressing the issue of undocumented foreign workers.
The announcement was made in a post on the President’s official X account on Wednesday.
The biometric process, launched in May 2024, involves the collection of ten fingerprints and facial recognition data. President Muizzu described the initiative as a milestone in the Government’s ongoing efforts to regulate migrant labour and ensure their rights are protected.
He emphasized the significance of the expatriate community, noting they make up the majority of the national workforce, and called for a better understanding of their working conditions.
The President also expressed gratitude to immigration officers and technical teams for their contribution to the successful rollout of the registration programme.
