Former President of the United Nations General Assembly and former Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid marked Labour Day with a scathing critique of the current administration, calling out the government’s treatment of workers and warning that the nation is “failing the test of justice.”

In a message posted on his official X account, Shahid said workers continue to face rising costs, declining security, and diminishing freedoms under President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s leadership. “When the hands that build the nation can’t afford to feed their families, something is deeply broken,” he wrote.

He further warned that “a government that fears its workers does not serve them. It controls them. And that must change.”

Highlighting persistent inequality within the civil service — the country’s largest workforce — Shahid called for urgent reforms to harmonise salaries and modernise outdated pay structures. “No more delays,” he said.

Shahid concluded with a call to envision a bold future workforce: “young, skilled, diverse, and fearless,” adding that such change is not idealistic, but essential.
