President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the Thalassaemia Centre and the Maldivian Blood Services (MBS) will be brought under the administration of the Malé Group of Hospitals in the coming weeks, as part of efforts to streamline healthcare delivery and improve patient services.
The announcement was made during the fifth episode of the Rayyithunaa Eku podcast, coinciding with World Thalassaemia Day. The President highlighted that managing the Centre under a hospital structure would enhance both service quality and operational efficiency. The administrative shift is expected to take place within the next two weeks.
With the integration, patients will benefit from better access to specialist care and quicker medical intervention. The new structure will also oversee thalassaemia services across the atolls. Following the relocation of the Thalassaemia Centre to the Orange Hiyaa facility in Hulhumalé, the Malé Group of Hospitals will take on a broader role in managing these services.
President Dr. Muizzu also revealed that 14 patients have received bone marrow transplants under a government-funded initiative, with plans to expand the programme. Preparations are underway to establish a dedicated Thalassaemia hospital in the Maldives, with agreements to be signed soon with contractors required to provide transplant services.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment, the President said securing long-term care solutions for thalassaemia patients remains a key national priority.
