The Maldives has collected MVR 761.1 million in green tax so far this year, according to the Ministry of Finance. This marks an increase of MVR 331.5 million compared to the MVR 429.6 million collected during the same period last year—representing a 77 percent rise.
The surge in green tax revenue corresponds with a notable rise in tourist arrivals, which has surpassed one million so far this year.
The green tax, introduced in 2016 to fund environmental conservation projects, is levied on tourists. A tax of USD 12 is charged per night from tourists staying at resorts, safaris, and hotels, while those staying in guesthouses are charged USD 6 per night.
