President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has ratified the First Amendment to the Maldives Sports Act (Act No. 30/2015), marking a significant milestone in the advancement of sports governance and development across the country.
The ratification ceremony was held Monday morning at the President’s Office, attended by key government and sports officials, including the Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation and the President of the Maldives Olympic Committee.
The amendment introduces several reforms, including the decentralization of sports development to atoll and island levels, the formation of regional sports associations, and the establishment of a dedicated Sports Fund to support long-term sector growth.
Key provisions also include the formal recognition of the Maldives Paralympic Committee as an independent legal entity, the creation of divisions within associations to promote inclusivity, and the establishment of the Maldives National Anti-Doping Agency. A legal mechanism for sports arbitration has also been mandated to ensure justice in sports-related disputes.
The Amendment also paves the way for structured school sports, with the formation of 'inter-scholastic' associations and clubs.
President Muizzu highlighted the Amendment’s potential to foster talent, strengthen sports institutions, and create a fair and inclusive environment for athletes nationwide.
The bill was passed during the 26th sitting of the first session of the 2025 parliamentary term on May 5 and has now come into legal effect following publication in the Government Gazette.
