President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has hailed the ratification of the First Amendment to the Maldives Sports Act as a historic milestone, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the country's sporting landscape.
Speaking at a special ceremony held Monday at the President’s Office, the President described the amendment as a transformative step that will decentralize sports development, expand opportunities for athletes, and elevate all sporting disciplines to professional standards.
Highlighting the establishment of the National Sports Fund, President Muizzu said the reform enables sustained investment in the sector. He also assured that staff of existing sports corporations, set to be dissolved under the new law, will be provided with alternative employment.
He said the amendment will bring about greater transparency, improved administration, and ensure the governance of the sports sector aligns with principles of good governance. According to the President, the most impactful reform is the decentralisation of sports development, ensuring a broader reach and promoting inclusivity at the atoll and island levels.
The President also underscored that the Maldives Paralympic Committee is now officially recognised as an independent legal entity with full authority, on par with the Maldives Olympic Committee. This move guarantees equal sporting opportunities for persons with disabilities.
Additionally, the amendment marks the first time that gender discrimination in sports has been explicitly prohibited under Maldivian law, setting a precedent for fairness and equality in the country’s sporting community.
