Vice President Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef has called for innovative thinking and bold action to tackle the climate crisis, especially for frontline nations like the Maldives. He made the remarks at the opening ceremony of the Blue Planet Alliance Fellowship Programme held in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Addressing the gathering as a special guest, Vice President Latheef highlighted the harsh realities faced by small island nations, stating that the climate crisis is no longer a distant threat but a lived experience. He reaffirmed the Maldives' continued leadership in climate action despite the mounting challenges.

The Vice President also spotlighted the launch of the Maldives’ Third Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) and the Energy Roadmap 2024–2033, which aims to generate 33 percent of the country’s electricity from renewable sources by 2028. He said this goal is central to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s vision of reducing the nation’s dependence on fossil fuels.

Praising the Blue Planet Alliance Fellowship Programme, Latheef described it as a critical platform for knowledge sharing and collaboration among island nations. He commended its efforts to bring together policy experts, community advocates, and energy leaders to build climate resilience and advance clean energy solutions.

Concluding his remarks, Vice President Latheef urged fellows to explore beyond technological solutions and consider innovative policies and financing models that can spark meaningful change and shape global climate dialogue.
