Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has described the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) rally as a desperate and reckless movement that undermines the rule of law.
In a Facebook post on Saturday, the Vice President said the protest, held under the guise of a peaceful demonstration, was aimed at disrupting the country and weakening constitutional principles. He said the actions of the MDP reflected a deliberate attempt by its leadership to create disorder despite police cooperation, adding that the rally showed the party’s failure to uphold the values it claims to defend.
Several government ministers also condemned the protest in separate social media posts.
The MDP’s rally, one of the largest in recent years, saw hundreds of people march from the Artificial Beach area toward Majeedhee Magu, calling for President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s resignation. Clashes broke out between protesters and police during the demonstration.
Seven individuals were arrested, with one later released under conditions, while six were remanded in custody for 15 days.
