President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has officially inaugurated the new airport in M. Muli, hailing it as the economic gateway to Mulaku Atoll and a key milestone in the government's efforts to enhance connectivity and decentralized development.
The opening ceremony, held Tuesday morning at Muli Airport, was attended by residents of Muli and senior officials of the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), the contractor for the project. President Muizzu was presented with a special plaque in recognition of his role in initiating the airport development during his tenure as Minister of Housing in 2014.
Speaking at the event, President Muizzu emphasized that the airport would bring significant economic opportunities to the region and reaffirmed his administration's commitment to ensuring that every inhabited island is within 30 minutes of an airport. With the opening of Muli Airport, this pledge has now been realized for Mulaku Atoll.
The airport, built on 54 hectares of reclaimed land, features a 1,200-meter-long, 30-meter-wide runway. It was developed under a contract awarded to MTCC on February 28, 2021, during President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration. The project was executed at a cost of MVR 212 million and is funded through the national budget. A test flight landed in April, with commercial flights scheduled to begin on May 24.
During his address, President Muizzu outlined key upcoming development projects for Muli, including the construction of a 650-meter causeway to link Muli and Naalaafushi, land reclamation, and port development initiatives, which are included in next year’s national budget.
He also announced plans to begin Muli’s road development project in 2026 and confirmed that work on a new building for the regional hospital is already underway. Shore protection projects are expected to commence next year.
Addressing the island's pressing housing needs, the President unveiled a 300-unit housing project, aimed at promoting internal migration and accommodating population growth. He reiterated the importance of population consolidation for sustainable development and urged citizens to support this national objective.
Highlighting his administration’s focus on results-driven governance, President Muizzu said the next two years would be defined by accelerated infrastructure development. He pledged the signing of over 300 new projects in the next two weeks and noted that between February and the coming two months, up to 800 projects will be awarded.
In addition to broader national targets, the President also announced short-term goals of establishing waste management systems within a year and developing sports facilities in rural areas within the next two years.
President Muizzu concluded his remarks by assuring citizens that his development agenda is shaped by public aspirations, and that projects already underway will be completed and handed over swiftly in the coming days.
