Vice President Uz. Hussain Mohamed Latheef has called for urgent reforms in international climate finance, highlighting the Maldives' commitment to sustainable ocean stewardship during his address at the Honolulu International Forum (HIF).

Speaking at the prestigious platform hosted by the Pacific Forum, the Vice President emphasized the Maldives' vulnerability to climate change, citing rising sea levels, coral bleaching, and storm surges as critical threats.

He reaffirmed the country’s dedication to the Blue Economy through sustainable fisheries, marine conservation, and coastal management. However, he noted that these efforts require accessible and sustainable climate financing.

Calling for a shift from GDP-based development models, the Vice President urged the adoption of frameworks that better reflect the unique vulnerabilities of small island developing states. He also proposed exploring innovative financing tools, such as climate-linked debt instruments.

Concluding his remarks, the Vice President stressed the need for global collaboration to protect marine ecosystems and ensure a resilient future for island nations.
