President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has inaugurated the newly relocated Maldivian Blood Services and the Thalassemia and Other Haemoglobinopathies Centre at Orange Hiyaa in Hulhumalé.
Following the inauguration, the President toured the facility, meeting with patients and staff to assess the quality of services. The relocation, expedited by the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) under the President’s directive, was completed in just one month to address longstanding space constraints and service delivery challenges.
The upgraded facility features dedicated wards for women, children, and general patients. Blood storage capacity has tripled from 200 to 600 pints, supported by the addition of two new storage units. Sixteen new staff, including medical, laboratory, and administrative personnel, have been deployed to bolster operations.
To improve accessibility, a special bus stop and dedicated transport services have been introduced for patients visiting the facility.
As part of broader reforms, President Muizzu recently announced plans to place the Thalassemia Centre and Maldivian Blood Services under the Malé City Group of Hospitals’ Governing Board, with the aim of streamlining services and optimizing operational hours.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to thalassemia patients, the President pledged to ensure equal access to rights and services for children living with the condition.
