Vice President Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef has called for urgent and united global action to combat the accelerating loss of glaciers, warning of its devastating impacts during the High-Level International Conference on the Preservation of Glaciers.
Delivering remarks at the conference’s opening session, the Vice President expressed the Maldives’ deep concern over the implications of glacier loss, particularly for low-lying island nations. He noted that the Maldives has submitted its third Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) this year, aiming to cut 1.52 million tonnes of emissions by 2035 and generate 33 per cent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2028.
Urging countries to submit updated NDCs before COP30, the Vice President stressed the need for increased ambition and genuine commitment. He also highlighted the specific vulnerabilities of Small Island Developing States and called for tailored international support through concessional finance, appropriate technologies, and capacity-building.
Reaffirming the Maldives’ commitment to global climate cooperation, VP Latheef called for enhanced solidarity to address the escalating threat of glacier loss and rising sea levels.
