President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced a reduction in electricity tariffs for the domestic category, reaffirming his Administration’s commitment to easing the financial burden on households and ensuring the measure’s long-term sustainability.

Speaking in an interview with Public Service Media (PSM), the President said the move fulfils a key pledge of his presidential campaign and urged relevant authorities to implement and maintain the reduction effectively. He had first announced the decision in a post on his official X account on Friday night.

“The people should not have to suffer due to inefficiencies in energy policies or mismanagement,” President Muizzu said, adding that the Government would use all available means to ensure affordable and reliable electricity access for citizens.

He noted this is the first time a Maldivian government has taken such a direct step to correct the consequences of poor energy policy and reduce costs for the public.

To support the tariff reduction, the President reaffirmed the Administration’s commitment to investing in renewable energy. He said the Government aims to shift 30% of national energy consumption to renewable sources by 2028, a move expected to enhance efficiency and absorb the impact of reduced rates.

In line with past relief measures, the Government has also waived fines for unpaid domestic electricity and water bills and provided Ramadan bill discounts for two consecutive years. Additional discounts were extended into April 2025, citing a rise in power usage during a heatwave.

President Muizzu concluded by stating that his Government remains focused on solving challenges through sustainable, citizen-first policies.
