President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed that the Maldives’ foreign policy is rooted in national interest rather than political alignment with any specific country.

In an interview with Ceylon Today, the President addressed questions surrounding recent shifts in foreign relations with India, China, and the United States. He dismissed claims of a “pro-China” stance, stating instead that his administration follows a “pro-Maldives” approach.

The President underscored that India, China, and the U.S. have long been key development partners, and expressed gratitude for their continued support. He added that navigating the changing geopolitical landscape requires strategic choices that benefit the Maldivian people.

Referring to recent efforts to restore ties with India following earlier tensions, President Muizzu said that diplomacy should adapt to the realities of the region without compromising national sovereignty. “We are not anyone’s backyard,” he said, reiterating that Maldives’ foreign policy will always prioritize its own national interest.
