The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has accused the government of using politically motivated charges to delay the allocation of housing flats under the Gedhoruveriya Housing Scheme introduced by the previous administration.

In a statement issued Tuesday night, the MDP condemned the charges filed against four former housing officials—former State Minister Akram Kamaluddin, former senior Housing Ministry officials Mohamed Arif and Lirugam Waheed, and former Director General Ahmed Vishan Naseem—accusing them of providing undue advantage to certain groups in the flat allocation process.

The MDP claimed the charges are baseless and intended to obstruct the distribution of flats already listed in the government gazette. The party alleged that the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is acting under direct orders from President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, violating legal procedures and undermining independent institutions.

According to the MDP, the renewed seizure of Akram Kamaluddin’s passport—after the High Court had overturned an earlier order—was another attempt to silence critics and hinder opposition efforts.

The party also argued that the prosecution stems from a fictitious investigation, lacking merit, and initiated with the goal of delaying flat allocations until the upcoming elections. It said the government intends to use the flats as political leverage in the electoral process.

The MDP further criticized the recent removal of Supreme Court judges, stating it reflects the erosion of judicial independence and raises serious concerns about fair trials in politically sensitive cases.

Despite these concerns, the MDP expressed confidence that the public will stand up against what it described as a corrupt and authoritarian administration.
